How to compare supplements

  • Amount per serving. Compare the amount of the active ingredient, not the capsule weight. For minerals, look for the elemental amount. For extracts, look for the standardised compound.
  • NRV percentage. For vitamins and minerals, the label shows the percentage of the EU Nutrient Reference Value per serving.
  • Form. The same nutrient comes in different forms, for example magnesium glycinate and magnesium citrate, or vitamin D3 and D2.
  • Capsule and suitability. Check whether the capsule is gelatine or vegetarian, and read the allergen information beside the ingredients list.
  • Servings per pack. Divide the pack price by the number of servings to compare cost per day.

A food supplement is a concentrated source of nutrients or other substances, such as vitamins, minerals, amino acids, fibre or plant extracts, sold in dose form like capsules, tablets, powders or drops. It is intended to supplement a normal diet. It is a food under Irish and EU law, not a medicine.

How are food supplements regulated in Ireland?

Food supplements sold in Ireland fall under Irish and EU food law, overseen by the Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI). Products must be notified to the FSAI when placed on the market. Notification is not an approval. Health claims are only permitted if they are authorised under EU Regulation 1924/2006. Medicines are a separate category, regulated by the HPRA.

What supplements should I take?

That depends on your diet, age, health and any medication, so it is a question for your GP, pharmacist or a registered dietitian. A retailer cannot answer it for you.
