Astaxanthin

Astaxanthin is a red-pigment carotenoid produced by the freshwater microalga Haematococcus pluvialis. It is the same compound that gives salmon, trout and shrimp their pink colour. As a food supplement in Ireland it is sold as softgels, usually in doses from 4mg to 12mg per softgel.

Our astaxanthin range covers both ends of that scale: a vegan and vegetarian 4mg single-ingredient softgel, and a higher-dose 12mg softgel that pairs astaxanthin with vitamin E and lutein. Both use the natural, algae-derived form, not a synthetic one. Browse the two options below.

Astaxanthin in Ireland

Astaxanthin is a permitted food supplement ingredient in Ireland and across the EU, regulated by the Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI). It is a food supplement, not a medicine, and no authorised EU health claim exists for astaxanthin itself. Irish VAT on food supplements is 13.5%.

How to choose
  • By dose: 4mg is a standard daily amount. 12mg is a higher-dose serving, at the top of what is commonly sold in Ireland.
  • By diet: the 4mg softgel is vegan and vegetarian. The 12mg softgel uses kosher gelatin and is not suitable for vegans or vegetarians.
  • By formula: the 4mg is single-ingredient astaxanthin. The 12mg is a complex that also supplies vitamin E and lutein.

A higher milligram figure does not on its own mean a product is more effective. It reflects the brand's chosen serving size. Check the supplement facts panel on any product you compare.

Astaxanthin: common questions

What is astaxanthin?

Astaxanthin is a naturally occurring red carotenoid pigment produced by the microalga Haematococcus pluvialis. It is the compound that gives salmon, trout and shrimp their pink colour. In supplement form it is sold in Ireland as softgels, most commonly in 4mg to 12mg doses.

Yes. Astaxanthin is a permitted food supplement ingredient in Ireland and across the EU. It is sold as a standard over-the-counter food supplement, regulated by the Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI). It is not a medicine.

Where does astaxanthin come from?

Natural astaxanthin is extracted from the freshwater microalga Haematococcus pluvialis. Both products in this range use the natural, algae-derived form, branded as AstaPure and Zanthin, rather than a synthetic version.

What astaxanthin strengths are available in Ireland?

Doses commonly range from 4mg to 12mg per softgel. This range includes a 4mg single-ingredient vegan softgel and a 12mg softgel that also contains vitamin E and lutein. A higher milligram figure does not on its own mean a product is more effective; it reflects the brand's chosen serving size.

Is 12mg of astaxanthin too much?

12mg is at the higher end of astaxanthin softgels sold in Ireland, where 4mg to 8mg is more typical. The usual guidance is one softgel a day taken with a meal, and not exceeding the stated recommended daily dose. If you are unsure what amount suits you, speak to a healthcare professional.

Is there a vegan or vegetarian astaxanthin option?

Yes. The 4mg softgel uses a plant-based shell made from modified corn starch, glycerin and carrageenan, with no gelatin, so it is suitable for vegans and vegetarians. The 12mg softgel uses kosher gelatin and is not suitable for vegans or vegetarians.

Does astaxanthin have any authorised EU health claims?

No authorised EU health claim exists for astaxanthin itself. Where a product also contains vitamin E, the authorised claim that vitamin E contributes to the protection of cells from oxidative stress may apply to its vitamin E content. No health claim is made for astaxanthin on this page.

When should I take astaxanthin?

Astaxanthin is fat-soluble, so it is usually taken with a meal that contains some fat to support absorption. Most labels direct one softgel daily with food. Follow the directions on the product you choose and do not exceed the recommended daily dose.

How fast is delivery in Ireland, and are there customs charges?

Orders are dispatched next-day from our Dublin base by DPD, with free delivery over €75. Because orders ship from within Ireland, there are no customs charges or import fees.
