Vitamin B Complex Ireland: Benefits, Side Effects, the B6 Limit and Which to Buy
Vitamin B complex is one of the most-bought supplements in Ireland and one of the least understood. Here is what the eight B vitamins actually do, what the trials show for energy and stress, the vitamin B6 safety limit most labels ignore, and how to pick a B complex that is worth taking.
What it is. Vitamin B complex combines the eight B vitamins (B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, biotin, folate and B12) in one food supplement. In Ireland it is regulated by the FSAI, not as a medicine, and the B vitamins carry authorised EU health claims, including the reduction of tiredness and fatigue.
What the evidence shows. A 2019 meta-analysis found a small benefit of B vitamins for stress (SMD 0.23, p = 0.03) but none for anxiety or depressive symptoms (Young et al., Nutrients). Extra B vitamins do not add energy if your intake is already adequate.
What to check before you buy. Vitamin B6. EFSA's 2023 upper limit is 12 mg a day and the FSAI's maximum safe level in supplements is 20 mg a day, yet some "B-100" products contain 100 mg per capsule. Probiotic.ie's featured B complexes contain 10 mg and 16 mg, with methylfolate and methylcobalamin, shipped from Dublin.
Vitamin B complex definition: a vitamin B complex is a food supplement that provides all eight water-soluble B vitamins (thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, pantothenic acid, vitamin B6, biotin, folate and vitamin B12) in one tablet or capsule, in either standard forms (folic acid, cyanocobalamin) or active forms (methylfolate, methylcobalamin).
- What it is: all eight B vitamins in one supplement
- Water-soluble? Yes; B12 is stored in the liver, the others largely are not
- Authorised EU claims: yes, for each B vitamin at 15%+ NRV per serving
- Vitamin B6 upper limit: 12 mg/day (EFSA, 2023)
- FSAI maximum safe level in supplements: B6 20 mg/day; folic acid 500 µg/day
- Common harmless effect: bright yellow urine (riboflavin)
- Active forms: methylfolate, methylcobalamin, P-5-P (B6)
- Is it a stimulant? No
- Irish regulatory status: food supplement under FSAI rules, not a medicine
- Irish VAT on supplements: 13.5%
- A B complex is not a medicine and is not a treatment for fatigue, anxiety, depression or any condition.
- It is not an energy drink: B vitamins support normal energy metabolism; they do not add energy if your status is already normal.
- "Higher strength" is not better: high-dose vitamin B6 over time is linked to nerve damage.
- It is not a pregnancy supplement; HSE folic acid advice is specific.
- It is not a mosquito repellent.
What is established: each B vitamin has authorised EU claims, including normal energy-yielding metabolism and the reduction of tiredness and fatigue.
What is modest: a small benefit for perceived stress in healthy and at-risk adults (Young et al., 2019; Stough et al., 2011; Kennedy et al., 2010).
What is not shown: effects on anxiety or depression, or extra energy in people with adequate intake.
Key safety note: keep total vitamin B6 at or below 12 mg a day for long-term use, and count every supplement that contains it.
The trials discussed in this article relate to B vitamin supplementation in general, not to any product sold by Probiotic.ie. The authorised EU health claims on this page relate to the named B vitamins, apply where a product provides at least 15% of the Nutrient Reference Value per serving, and are not claims for any other ingredient. These products are food supplements, not medicines.

What is vitamin B complex? The eight B vitamins explained
The B vitamins are eight separate nutrients that often work together in the same metabolic pathways. Most are water-soluble and not stored in large amounts, so you need a regular supply from food. B12 is the exception: the liver holds a reserve.
| Vitamin | One authorised EU claim (contributes to…) |
|---|---|
| B1 thiamine | the normal function of the heart |
| B2 riboflavin | the maintenance of normal vision |
| B3 niacin | normal psychological function |
| B5 pantothenic acid | normal mental performance |
| B6 | the regulation of hormonal activity |
| B7 biotin | the maintenance of normal hair |
| B9 folate | maternal tissue growth during pregnancy |
| B12 | normal red blood cell formation |
Each claim applies to the named vitamin under Commission Regulation (EU) No 432/2012, where a food provides at least 15% of the Nutrient Reference Value per serving.[1]
Vitamin B complex benefits: what you can actually expect
B vitamins are one of the few supplement categories with a long list of authorised EU claims. These are the shared ones that make a B complex popular:
- Energy: B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B12 and biotin contribute to normal energy-yielding metabolism.
- Tiredness: B2, B3, B5, B6, B12 and folate contribute to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue.
- Mind: B1, B3, B6, B12, biotin and folate contribute to normal psychological function.
- Nerves: B1, B2, B3, B6, B12 and biotin contribute to normal functioning of the nervous system.
- Blood and homocysteine: B6 and B12 contribute to normal red blood cell formation; B6, B12 and folate contribute to normal homocysteine metabolism.
- Immune system: B6, B12 and folate contribute to the normal function of the immune system.
"Contributes to normal" means these vitamins are needed for normal function. It does not mean that taking more than you need gives you more energy. People most likely to benefit are those whose diet or absorption leaves them short.
Does vitamin B complex help with stress, energy or anxiety? The trials
Young et al.: 16 trials, 2,015 adults
B vitamins gave a small benefit for stress in healthy and at-risk adults (SMD 0.23, p = 0.03). No effect on anxiety (p = 0.71) and no significant effect on depressive symptoms (p = 0.07).[2]
Young LM et al. Nutrients. 2019;11(9):2232.
Stough et al.: 60 workers, 90 days
High-dose B complex groups reported significantly lower personal work strain and less confusion and depressed mood after 12 weeks. Other mood and anxiety measures did not change.[3]
Stough C et al. Hum Psychopharmacol. 2011;26(7):470-476. PMID 21905094.
Kennedy et al.: 215 men, 33 days
Working men aged 30 to 55 taking a high-dose B complex with vitamin C and minerals improved on stress, general mental health and vigour scales, and felt less mentally tired. The product also contained vitamin C and minerals.[4]
Kennedy DO et al. Psychopharmacology. 2010;211(1):55-68.
Not for anxiety or depression
The best pooled evidence shows no effect on anxiety and no significant effect on depressive symptoms. Effects on stress are small, and most trials used high-dose products for 1 to 3 months.

Vitamin B complex side effects, and the vitamin B6 limit most labels ignore
Most B complex side effects are harmless. One is not, and it is the most important thing in this guide.
- Bright yellow urine: excess riboflavin (B2) being excreted. Harmless.
- Flushing: nicotinic acid, one form of niacin, can cause warmth, redness or itching. Niacinamide does not.
- Stomach upset: take it with food.
- Blood tests: high-dose biotin can interfere with some laboratory tests. Tell your doctor you take it.
- In 2023 EFSA set a tolerable upper intake level for vitamin B6 of 12 mg a day for adults, including in pregnancy, based on peripheral neuropathy (nerve damage causing tingling, numbness or pain in the hands and feet).[5]
- The FSAI's 2020 guidance for Irish food businesses sets a maximum safe level of 20 mg a day for vitamin B6 in food supplements, and 500 µg a day for folic acid.[6]
- Many "B-50" and "B-100" products contain 50 to 100 mg of B6 per serving: four to eight times EFSA's limit.
- B6 also appears in multivitamins, magnesium complexes and "energy" products. Add them up.
We feature B complexes in this guide only where the daily serving is within the FSAI maximum safe levels for vitamin B6 (20 mg) and folic acid (500 µg). Doctor's Best Fully Active provides 10 mg of B6, below the EFSA limit too. Life Extension BioActive provides 16 mg, within the FSAI level but above EFSA's newer 12 mg figure, so it suits shorter-term or higher-need use rather than indefinite daily use.
Methyl (active) B complex vs standard: is methylated better?
| Nutrient | Standard form | Active form |
|---|---|---|
| Folate (B9) | Folic acid | Methylfolate (5-MTHF, e.g. Quatrefolic®, calcium L-methylfolate) |
| B12 | Cyanocobalamin | Methylcobalamin |
| B6 | Pyridoxine HCl | Pyridoxal 5'-phosphate (P-5-P) |
| B2 | Riboflavin | Riboflavin 5'-phosphate |
- Why people choose methylated: these are the forms the body uses directly, so no conversion step is needed. Many people with MTHFR gene variants prefer methylfolate.
- What is not proven: no large trial shows a methylated B complex gives better health outcomes than a standard one for most people.
Both featured products use methylfolate and methylcobalamin. Doctor's Best and Life Extension also supply part of their B6 as P-5-P.
Which vitamin B complex should I buy?

- Want one capsule a day with B6 inside EFSA's limit? Doctor's Best Fully Active B Complex. Our default pick.
- Want higher B1, B3, B5 and biotin in bioactive forms? Life Extension BioActive Complete B-Complex. Note the 16 mg of B6 and possible niacin flush.
- Vegan and only worried about B12? NOW Methyl B-12 1,000 µg lozenges.
- Vitamin B6: 12 mg or less per day for long-term use.
- Folic acid: 500 µg or less per day (FSAI maximum safe level).
- Niacin: "nicotinic acid" can cause flushing; "niacinamide" does not.
- Serving size: some products need 2 capsules to reach the amounts on the front.
- Other supplements: add up B6 and folic acid from everything you take.
Vitamin B complex vs B12: which do you need?
- Choose B12 alone if your main gap is B12, which is the typical situation on a vegan or very low animal-food diet.
- Choose a B complex if you want all eight B vitamins covered in one product.
- Do not stack a high-dose B complex on top of a multivitamin without checking the B6 total.
Our vitamin B12 Ireland guide covers methylcobalamin 1,000 µg, absorption and who tends to run low.
When to take vitamin B complex, and how long it takes to work
Take it with a meal, usually breakfast or lunch. Morning suits most people; some find a B complex in the evening keeps them awake, but it is not harmful. Follow the label serving: 1 capsule for Doctor's Best, 2 capsules for Life Extension.
The HSE recommends 400 µg (mcg) of folic acid a day for women who can get pregnant, starting at least 3 months before pregnancy.[7] A general B complex is not a pregnancy supplement. Speak to your GP, midwife or pharmacist before using one.

Frequently asked questions
What is vitamin B complex?
Vitamin B complex is a supplement that combines the eight B vitamins in one product: thiamine (B1), riboflavin (B2), niacin (B3), pantothenic acid (B5), vitamin B6, biotin (B7), folate (B9) and vitamin B12. They are water-soluble vitamins with separate roles, mainly in energy metabolism, the nervous system and red blood cell formation. In Ireland, B-complex products are sold as food supplements under FSAI rules, not as medicines.
What are the benefits of vitamin B complex?
The authorised EU health claims are for the individual B vitamins. For example, vitamins B2, B3, B5, B6, B12 and folate contribute to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue; B1, B3, B6, B12, biotin and folate contribute to normal psychological function; and B6, B12 and folate contribute to normal homocysteine metabolism. These claims apply when a product provides at least 15% of the Nutrient Reference Value per serving. They describe normal body function, not extra energy for people who are already well nourished.
Does vitamin B complex help with stress or anxiety?
For stress, there is a modest signal. A 2019 meta-analysis of B vitamin trials in healthy and at-risk adults found a small benefit for stress (SMD 0.23, p = 0.03) but no effect on anxiety (p = 0.71) and no significant effect on depressive symptoms (Young et al., Nutrients, 2019). Vitamin B6 and folate contribute to normal psychological function under authorised EU claims. A B complex is not a treatment for anxiety; speak to your GP if anxiety is affecting daily life.
What are the side effects of vitamin B complex?
The most common is bright yellow urine, caused by riboflavin (B2), which is harmless. Products containing nicotinic acid, a form of niacin, can cause temporary flushing, itching or warmth. Mild stomach upset can occur, so take it with food. The main long-term concern is vitamin B6: EFSA links high intakes over time to peripheral neuropathy, nerve damage that causes tingling or numbness in the hands and feet. High-dose biotin can also interfere with some blood tests, so tell your doctor if you take it before a blood test.
Can you take too much vitamin B complex?
Yes, mainly through vitamin B6 and folic acid. In 2023 EFSA set a tolerable upper intake level for vitamin B6 of 12 mg a day for adults, based on the risk of peripheral neuropathy (EFSA Journal 2023;21(5):8006). The FSAI's 2020 guidance for Irish food businesses sets a maximum safe level in food supplements of 20 mg a day for vitamin B6 and 500 µg a day for folic acid (FSAI). Some "B-100" style products provide 100 mg of B6 per capsule, eight times the EFSA limit. Always check the B6 figure on the label.
Why does vitamin B complex make your urine yellow?
Riboflavin (vitamin B2) is naturally bright yellow. The body excretes the riboflavin it does not need in urine, which can turn it a vivid yellow or fluorescent colour for a few hours after taking a B complex. It is harmless and is not a sign the product is "wasted" or that anything is wrong.
When is the best time to take vitamin B complex? Can I take it at night?
Take it with a meal, usually breakfast or lunch. There is no strong evidence that one time of day is better, but many people prefer the morning because B vitamins are involved in energy metabolism, and some find a large dose in the evening keeps them awake. Taking it at night is not harmful. Consistency matters more than timing.
How long does vitamin B complex take to work?
If you were low in a B vitamin, it can take weeks to months to correct. The workplace trials that found effects on stress and mood ran for 33 days (Kennedy et al., 2010) and 90 days (Stough et al., 2011). If your intake was already adequate, you may notice no difference at all, because extra B vitamins do not add energy beyond normal function.
Is methyl (methylated) B complex better?
Methylated B complexes use methylfolate instead of folic acid and methylcobalamin instead of cyanocobalamin. These are forms the body uses directly, and they are often chosen by people who prefer not to rely on conversion, including people with MTHFR gene variants. However, no large trial has shown that a methylated B complex gives better health outcomes than a standard one for most people. Both forms are permitted sources of folate and B12 in the EU.
Is vitamin B complex the same as B12? Should I take B12 or B complex?
No. Vitamin B12 is one of the eight B vitamins; a B complex contains all eight, usually including B12. If your main concern is B12, for example on a vegan diet, a standalone B12 supplement covers it directly. If you want all eight together, a B complex is simpler. Our vitamin B12 Ireland guide covers B12 on its own.
Can I take vitamin B complex in pregnancy or when trying to conceive?
Speak to your GP, midwife or pharmacist first. The HSE recommends that women who can get pregnant take 400 µg (mcg) of folic acid every day, starting at least 3 months before pregnancy (HSE). A general B complex is not designed as a pregnancy supplement, may contain a different folate form or amount, and may contain more vitamin B6 than you need.
Does vitamin B complex stop mosquito bites?
No good evidence supports this. In a controlled study, taking vitamin B1 (thiamine) did not reduce mosquito attraction (Ives and Paskewitz, J Am Mosq Control Assoc, 2005). Use an approved insect repellent instead.
Is it safe to take vitamin B complex every day?
For most adults, a B complex taken at the label dose is generally considered safe, as most B vitamins are water-soluble and excess is excreted. The exception is vitamin B6, which can build up and cause nerve problems at high intakes over months to years. Choose a product with B6 at or below 12 mg a day if you plan to take it long term, and do not stack several supplements that each contain B6.
Is vitamin B complex regulated in Ireland?
Yes. Vitamin B complex products are sold in Ireland as food supplements under FSAI rules and EU food supplement law, not as medicines, and need no prescription. Only authorised EU health claims for the individual B vitamins may be used. The FSAI sets maximum safe levels in food supplements for vitamin B6 (20 mg a day) and folic acid (500 µg a day). Food supplements carry 13.5% VAT in Ireland.
