Do collagen supplements work?
Collagen is studied most for skin, and that is where the strongest signal sits. Hydrolysed collagen peptides have been linked to small improvements in skin hydration and elasticity in randomised trials.
Earlier meta-analyses pooled these trials and reported modest gains: de Miranda, Weimer and Rossi (Int J Dermatol, 2021, PMID 33742704) and Pu and colleagues (Nutrients, 2023) both found improvements in hydration and elasticity.12 The most recent and comprehensive synthesis, a January 2026 umbrella review by Ravindran and colleagues (Aesthetic Surgery Journal Open Forum) covering 16 meta-analyses, 113 RCTs and 7,983 participants, also found collagen consistently associated with favourable skin elasticity and hydration outcomes.9
The catch is the quality of the underlying evidence. That 2026 umbrella review rated 15 of its 16 included reviews low or critically low quality on the AMSTAR-2 tool, and noted that skin roughness and wrinkle depth did not improve significantly.9
The sharpest check comes from Myung and Park (American Journal of Medicine, 2025), who separated trials by funding source and quality. In the trials not funded by industry, and in the high-quality trials, collagen showed no significant effect on hydration, elasticity or wrinkles, and the authors concluded there is currently no clinical evidence to support collagen for skin ageing.3 In fairness, a published comment argued that several trials they labelled "non-funded" were in fact industry R&D, which would weaken that subgroup split.10
So the fair summary is: pooled results look modestly positive, but the effect is small, the endpoints are soft, most of the evidence base is low quality, and it largely disappears in independent, high-quality trials. Collagen is a reasonable thing to try. It is not a proven treatment, and it cannot legally be sold as one.
Collagen types I, II and III explained
This is where most collagen content goes wrong. The types are not interchangeable, and a study on one tells you nothing about the others.
Type I and III are the forms studied in skin, hair, nail and bone contexts. They are usually sold as hydrolysed bovine or marine peptides at gram-level doses.

Marine vs bovine collagen
Both marine and bovine collagen are animal-derived peptides that supply the same building-block amino acids, chiefly glycine, proline and hydroxyproline. The differences are practical rather than dramatic.
Marine collagen comes from fish, is predominantly type I, and carries a fish allergen. It is often chosen by people who avoid beef or want a type I-led product.

How much collagen per day?
Dose is the fastest way to tell a serious collagen product from a token one, and the two categories are measured on completely different scales.
For hydrolysed peptides in skin research, trials typically use about 2.5 to 10 g per day. Powders reach this easily. Capsule products often do not, because you would need a large number of capsules to hit a gram-level dose.

Does oral collagen survive digestion?
This is the obvious reader question, and an honest page should answer it rather than dodge it.
Swallowed collagen is digested like any protein, broken down into amino acids and small peptides. Research has detected collagen-derived di- and tri-peptides, such as prolyl-hydroxyproline, circulating in the blood after ingestion, so some fragments are absorbed intact rather than fully broken down.
What the research does not show is that a collagen capsule travels whole to your skin or cartilage and rebuilds it. The building-block idea is a simplification. Is there a vegan collagen?
No, and it is worth being blunt about this because it is where a lot of products mislead.
All true collagen is animal-derived, from bovine or marine sources. There is no plant that produces collagen. Products sold as "vegan collagen" do not contain collagen. They contain collagen-builder nutrients, typically vitamin C plus amino acids like glycine and proline, that the body can use in its own collagen formation.

Collagen and the law in Ireland
Collagen is sold legally in Ireland as a food supplement, regulated by the Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI). It is not a medicine and is not regulated by the HPRA as one.
The key rule is that there is no EFSA-authorised health claim for collagen itself. The collagen-hydrolysate joint claim was assessed and rejected. That means a compliant Irish product describes collagen by type, source and content, and does not claim it improves, repairs or maintains skin, joints, hair, nails or cartilage.
The one authorised on-label route is vitamin C.
