Swanson Oral Probiotic Formula BLIS K12 Strawberry - 3 Billion CFU - 30 Chewable Tablets

Swanson Oral Probiotic Formula BLIS K12 Strawberry - 3 Billion CFU - 30 Chewable Tablets
Swanson Oral Probiotic Formula is a strawberry-flavoured chewable tablet containing a 21.25 mg bacterial blend standardised to 3 billion CFU per tablet at time of manufacture, built around the BLIS K12 strain of Streptococcus salivarius. One tablet per day, 30 tablets per bottle.
This is a chewable tablet designed to be chewed and dissolved in the mouth rather than swallowed whole. That makes it a different format from the capsule and sachet products in our gut range, which are made to pass through the stomach intact. If you are looking for a multi-strain formulation taken as a capsule or a sachet with water, this is not that product, and the format is the main thing separating the two.
The bacterial content is declared as a proprietary blend, so the manufacturer discloses the total blend weight and the total CFU count but not the CFU split between the five individual species. We state that plainly below rather than leave it out. The named strain designation, BLIS K12, is a registered trademark of BLIS Technologies Ltd, New Zealand.

CFU means colony forming units, a count of viable microorganisms at a stated point in time. The 3 billion CFU figure is declared at time of manufacture. No nutrient reference value has been established for any of these species, so no NRV percentage can be given. Because the blend is declared as proprietary, the CFU count for each individual species is not disclosed on the label.
Three of the five species carry updated genus names following the 2020 reclassification of the genus Lactobacillus (Zheng et al., 2020). The bottle uses the older abbreviated names. Both are given above so the label and the current nomenclature can be matched up. Lactobacillus acidophilus was unaffected by that reclassification and retains its name.
Ingredients: xylitol, chicory root (inulin), microcrystalline cellulose, stearic acid, natural strawberry flavouring, maltodextrin, natural vanilla flavouring with other natural flavourings, guar gum, rice extract blend, hydroxypropyl cellulose, beetroot juice powder (colour), citric acid, rebaudioside A (from stevia), bacterial blend as declared above.

Frequently asked questions
What is Swanson Oral Probiotic Formula?
It is a food supplement in strawberry-flavoured chewable tablet form. Each tablet contains a 21.25 mg bacterial blend standardised to 3 billion CFU at time of manufacture, made up of five named species. The bottle holds 30 tablets and the recommended intake is one tablet per day, chewed and dissolved in the mouth. It is manufactured by Swanson Health Products, Fargo, North Dakota, USA.
What is BLIS K12?
BLIS K12 is a specific strain designation of the bacterial species Streptococcus salivarius, developed by BLIS Technologies Ltd of New Zealand, and BLIS K12 is their registered trademark. A strain designation matters because two products naming the same species are not equivalent unless the strain code also matches. This product names the strain, which is more specific disclosure than genus and species alone.
Which bacterial species does it contain?
Five: Streptococcus salivarius (strain BLIS K12), Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactiplantibacillus plantarum, Limosilactobacillus reuteri and Lacticaseibacillus paracasei. The last three appear on the bottle under their pre-2020 names as L. plantarum, L. reuteri and L. paracasei, which were reassigned to new genera in the 2020 reclassification of Lactobacillus.
How many CFU are in each tablet, and is the per-species split disclosed?
Three billion CFU per tablet, declared at time of manufacture. The per-species split is not disclosed. The manufacturer declares the bacterial content as a proprietary blend, which means the total blend weight of 21.25 mg and the total CFU count are given but the individual CFU contribution of each of the five species is not. If a per-strain breakdown is important to you, choose a product that lists CFU against each named strain.
Is Streptococcus salivarius legal to sell as a food supplement in Ireland?
Yes. In the March 2025 update to the EU Novel Food Catalogue, Streptococcus salivarius as a whole organism was recorded as not novel in food supplements, meaning it does not require novel food authorisation for that use. Food uses other than food supplements may still be treated as novel. The catalogue is a non-binding orientation list maintained by the European Commission.
What sweeteners does it contain?
Xylitol, which is a polyol, and rebaudioside A derived from stevia. Xylitol is the first ingredient listed after the bacterial blend. Beetroot juice powder is used as a colour and natural strawberry and vanilla flavourings are used for taste. We do not state a sugars figure because the manufacturer does not publish a nutrition declaration per 100 g for this product.
Is it suitable for vegetarians and vegans?
The label carries a vegan marking, and a dairy free marking. It is a compressed tablet, not a capsule, so there is no gelatine capsule shell. The label does not state whether the stearic acid is of plant or animal origin. If that detail is decisive for you, contact us before ordering and we will check the batch in stock rather than answer from the manufacturer's website.
How do I take it and how long does a bottle last?
Chew and dissolve one tablet in the mouth per day. At one tablet per day a 30-tablet bottle lasts 30 days. It is for adults only, 18 years and over. Do not exceed the recommended daily dose.
Does it need to be refrigerated?
The label storage instruction is to store in a cool, dry place, and to keep the bottle out of reach of children. Some third-party listings for this product carry a refrigeration instruction that does not appear on the current label. Follow the instruction printed on the bottle you receive.
Are there any precautions?
For adults only. Consult your doctor or pharmacist before use if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, taking any medication or have a medical condition. Products containing polyols such as xylitol may have a laxative effect if consumed in excess. Xylitol is toxic to dogs, so keep the bottle out of reach of pets as well as children. Do not use if the seal is broken.
How is it delivered in Ireland, and will I pay customs charges?
No customs charges. The product is held in our Dublin warehouse and dispatched within Ireland by DPD, normally on the next working day, so nothing crosses a customs border on its way to you. Orders are shipped at ambient temperature, with no ice pack, in line with the label storage instruction.
