Swanson Biotin delivers 5000µg (5mg) of biotin, also known as vitamin B7, in a single daily capsule, with 100 capsules per bottle for a 100-day supply.

This is a high-strength single-ingredient biotin supplement. Each capsule provides 10,000% of the EU Nutrient Reference Value for biotin, from D-biotin, the form permitted for food supplements in the EU. Biotin is a water-soluble B vitamin that holds seven authorised EU health claims, including contributions to normal energy-yielding metabolism and the maintenance of normal hair and normal skin. If you are looking for a lower daily amount, biotin is also present at smaller amounts in most B-complex and multivitamin formulas.

Authorised EU health claims for biotin

Biotin contributes to normal energy-yielding metabolism, normal macronutrient metabolism, normal functioning of the nervous system and normal psychological function. Biotin also contributes to the maintenance of normal hair, normal skin and normal mucous membranes.

These are authorised claims under EU Regulation 1924/2006, relating to biotin. Each capsule far exceeds the qualifying amount (15% NRV). No claim is made for the maintenance of nails: no such claim is authorised for biotin in the EU.

How to take

Adults (18+): take one capsule per day with water. Do not exceed the recommended daily dose. Biotin is water-soluble and can be taken with or without food.

Frequently asked questions

What is Swanson Biotin 5000mcg?

It is a single-ingredient food supplement providing 5000µg of biotin (vitamin B7, sometimes called vitamin H) per capsule, with 100 capsules per bottle. Biotin is a water-soluble B vitamin found naturally in foods such as eggs, liver, nuts and wholegrains.

How much biotin is in each capsule?

Each capsule contains 5000µg (5mg) of D-biotin. That is 10,000% of the EU Nutrient Reference Value, which is set at 50µg per day. Note that US labels for this product show 16,667% because the US Daily Value for biotin (30µg) is lower than the EU reference figure — the product is identical, the reference value differs.

What does biotin do?

Under EU Regulation 1924/2006, biotin holds authorised claims stating that it contributes to normal energy-yielding metabolism, normal macronutrient metabolism, normal functioning of the nervous system, normal psychological function, and the maintenance of normal hair, normal skin and normal mucous membranes. These are the only health statements permitted for biotin in Ireland and the EU.

Does biotin have an authorised claim for nails?

No. The EU register authorises biotin claims for the maintenance of normal hair and normal skin, but a claim for normal nails was assessed and not authorised. We state only what the register permits, so no nail-related claim is made for this product.

Yes. D-biotin is a permitted vitamin form for food supplements under EU Directive 2002/46/EC, and no EU maximum permitted level has been set for biotin in supplements. This product is sold in Ireland as a food supplement under FSAI rules.

Is it suitable for vegetarians and vegans?

No. This version uses a gelatine capsule shell, so it is not suitable for vegetarians or vegans. Swanson also produces a vegan-capsule version of this product for some markets, so US listings often show "vegan capsules" for the same product name. The version we stock is the gelatine capsule.

How do I take it, and how long does a bottle last?

Take one capsule per day with water, with or without food. At one capsule daily, a 100-capsule bottle lasts just over three months.

Can biotin affect blood test results?

Yes, this is worth knowing at high intakes. Biotin supplements can interfere with certain laboratory immunoassay tests, including some thyroid and cardiac tests, potentially causing falsely high or falsely low readings. If you are having blood tests, tell your doctor or the laboratory that you take a biotin supplement — they may advise pausing it for a period beforehand.

Are there any precautions?

This product is for adults aged 18 and over. Consult your healthcare professional before use if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, taking medication or have a medical condition. Do not exceed the recommended daily dose, and see the note above about laboratory blood tests.

How fast is delivery to Ireland?

Orders are dispatched from our Dublin warehouse with next-day DPD delivery across Ireland. Because we ship from within Ireland, there are no customs charges or import delays.
