NOW Foods Whole Psyllium Husks - 454 g (About 45 Servings)

NOW Foods Whole Psyllium Husks - 454 g (About 45 Servings)
NOW Foods Whole Psyllium Husks is a single-ingredient dietary fibre: whole, unmilled psyllium seed husk from Plantago ovata, supplying 7 g of fibre per 10 g serving in a resealable 454 g bag.
One ingredient, nothing else. No fillers, no sweeteners, no flavouring, no binders. At roughly 70 g of fibre per 100 g, it qualifies for the EU nutrition claim high fibre with a wide margin.
This is the whole husk format, not milled psyllium powder. Whole husks are coarser, take more vigorous stirring to disperse, and settle differently in liquid. Some people prefer the texture and the minimal processing; others find powder easier to mix. If you want the finer-milled format, this is not the product for you, and we would rather tell you that here than take the return.

Ingredients: psyllium (seed husk). May contain traces of sesame. Not manufactured with yeast, wheat, gluten, soy, corn, milk, egg, fish, shellfish or tree nut ingredients. Produced in a GMP facility that processes other ingredients containing these allergens.
NRV% figures are percentages of the EU Nutrient Reference Values set out in Regulation (EU) No 1169/2011. Iron and potassium are both present below the 15% NRV threshold, so they are stated here as composition facts only. Energy is calculated on the EU basis, which counts fibre at 2 kcal per gram. US-market labelling uses a different conversion factor and therefore shows a higher figure for the same product.

How to take
Vigorously mix 1 to 2 level tablespoons into at least 350 ml (12 fl oz) of water or juice and drink immediately. Drink plenty of additional fluid throughout the day. Start with a smaller amount and increase gradually over several weeks.
Do not exceed the recommended daily amount. For adults 18 and over. Store in a cool, dry place after opening.
Important: take with plenty of liquid. This product should be taken with at least a full glass of liquid. Taking it without enough liquid may cause choking. Do not take this product if you have difficulty swallowing.
Not a medicine. This product is a food supplement and is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease or health condition. No authorised EU health claim is made for psyllium husk on this page. Food supplements should not be used as a substitute for a varied, balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle.
Why this page makes no health claims. Under EU Regulation 1924/2006, a health claim may only be made if it appears on the authorised list. Several dietary fibres do hold authorised claims, including oat and barley beta-glucans, guar gum, pectins, rye fibre and wheat bran fibre. Psyllium husk does not. Those authorisations are specific to the named substance and cannot be transferred to a different fibre.
So we sell this product on its composition instead: the exact fibre content, the soluble and insoluble split, the single-ingredient formulation, and the format. If you read a psyllium claim elsewhere that sounds like an EFSA authorisation, it is not one.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is NOW Foods Whole Psyllium Husks?
It is a single-ingredient dietary fibre made from the seed husk of Plantago ovata, a plant grown mainly in India. The husk is supplied whole and unmilled rather than ground into powder. One 454 g resealable bag contains about 45 servings at the 10 g level. There are no other ingredients.
How much fibre is in a serving?
A 10 g serving, which is 2 level tablespoons, contains 7 g of fibre. Of that, 6 g is soluble fibre and 1 g is insoluble. Across the whole product that works out at roughly 70 g of fibre per 100 g, which is why it qualifies for the EU nutrition claim high fibre. The threshold for that claim is 6 g per 100 g.
What is the difference between whole husks and psyllium powder?
Whole husks are the unmilled husk, coarse and flaky. Powder is the same material ground finer. The fibre content per gram is broadly similar. The practical difference is handling: powder disperses into liquid more readily, while whole husks need more vigorous stirring and are drunk immediately before they thicken. Neither format is superior; it is a texture and convenience preference.
Does psyllium husk carry an authorised EU health claim?
No. There is no authorised EU health claim for psyllium husk, so we make none on this page. Some fibres do hold authorised claims, such as beta-glucans from oats and barley, guar gum and pectins, but those authorisations apply only to the specific substance named in the register and cannot be applied to psyllium. Anything you see online presenting a psyllium health claim as EFSA-authorised is inaccurate.
Is psyllium husk legal to sell in Ireland?
Yes. Psyllium husk is a permitted food ingredient and is sold in Ireland as a food supplement, regulated by the Food Safety Authority of Ireland. What is restricted is not the ingredient but the language used to market it: without an authorised health claim, retailers may describe the composition and format but may not attribute health benefits to it.
Is it suitable for vegetarians and vegans?
Yes. The pack is marked Vegetarian/Vegan and the product is a plant seed husk supplied loose in a bag, so there is no capsule shell or coating to consider. We confirm suitability markings against the stock we physically hold rather than relying on manufacturer web listings.
How do I mix it so it does not clump?
Add the husks to at least 350 ml of water or juice, stir vigorously, and drink straight away. Whole husks begin to thicken on contact with liquid, so the window is short. Adding the liquid first and the husks second, then stirring immediately, reduces clumping. Follow with more fluid.
Are there any allergens?
The pack states that the product may contain traces of sesame, which is a declarable allergen, so avoid it if you are sesame allergic. It is not manufactured with yeast, wheat, gluten, soy, corn, milk, egg, fish, shellfish or tree nut ingredients, though it is produced in a GMP facility that handles those allergens. Note that "not manufactured with gluten" is a statement about the manufacturing inputs and is not the same as a certified gluten-free claim, so we do not describe this product as gluten free.
Any precautions?
Always take it with at least a full glass of liquid, as taking it dry or with too little liquid may cause choking. Do not take it if you have difficulty swallowing. Start with a smaller amount and build up gradually over several weeks. It is for adults only. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or taking any medication, speak to your doctor or pharmacist before use, as fibre taken at the same time as medication can affect absorption.
How fast is delivery, and are there customs charges?
Orders are dispatched next working day from our warehouse in Dublin by DPD. Because the product ships from within Ireland, there are no customs charges, no import VAT to settle and no cross-border delays.
