Healthy Origins Pycnogenol 100mg is a food supplement containing Pycnogenol®, the registered-trademark French maritime pine bark extract (Pinus pinaster) produced by Horphag Research, standardised to 65–75% procyanidins and supplied as 60 vegetarian capsules of 100mg each.

Pycnogenol is not generic pine bark. It is a branded, standardised extract taken from the bark of maritime pines grown in the Les Landes de Gascogne forest in south-west France, and the name Pycnogenol® is a trademark of Horphag Research. It holds no authorised EU health claim, so this page describes the extract and the specification only. At 100mg per capsule in a 60-count pack, it sits at the top of the per-capsule range typically sold in Ireland, where 30mg to 60mg capsules in 30-count packs are common.

What is Pycnogenol?

Pycnogenol® is the trademarked name for a standardised extract of French maritime pine bark (Pinus pinaster), produced by Horphag Research from trees grown in the Les Landes de Gascogne forest in south-west France. It is standardised to 70% ± 5% procyanidins and also contains catechin, epicatechin, taxifolin and phenolic acids. In Ireland it is sold as a food supplement. It is not certified organic, and this product is not described as organic.

Is Pycnogenol the same as pine bark extract?

Not exactly. Pycnogenol is one specific, branded pine bark extract with a fixed species, origin and procyanidin specification. "Pine bark extract" on its own can mean an extract from any Pinus species, at any standardisation. This product is the branded Pycnogenol® extract, as stated on the label.

Are Pycnogenol and grape seed extract the same?

No. Both contain procyanidins, but Pycnogenol comes from the bark of the French maritime pine and grape seed extract comes from the seeds of Vitis vinifera. They are different plants with different polyphenol profiles and are listed as different ingredients on a supplement label.

How much Pycnogenol is in each capsule, and how much should I take?

Each capsule contains 100mg of Pycnogenol, standardised to 65–75% procyanidins. The label directions are one capsule once or twice daily with a meal, so 100mg to 200mg per day. Do not exceed the stated dose.

What is Pycnogenol used for?

Pycnogenol is sold in Ireland as a food supplement. There is no EU-authorised health claim for it under Regulation 1924/2006, so we do not describe uses or benefits on this page. What we can confirm is the specification: the source, the standardisation and the dose per capsule.

Is it suitable for vegetarians, and does it contain allergens?

Yes, it is suitable for vegetarians: the capsule shell is cellulose and water, not gelatine. It is free from wheat, gluten, soy, milk, egg, fish, shellfish, peanut and tree nut derived ingredients, as stated on the label.

Are there any precautions or side effects?

Follow the label dose. This is a food supplement, not a medicine, and is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or taking any medication, speak to your doctor or pharmacist before use. Stop and seek advice if you experience any adverse reaction. Keep out of sight and reach of children.

Is this the same as The Ordinary Pycnogenol 5%?

No. The Ordinary Pycnogenol 5% is a topical skincare serum applied to the face. This product is an oral food supplement in capsules. Both use the Pycnogenol® ingredient, but they are different product types and are not interchangeable.

Can I buy Pycnogenol in Ireland, and what about delivery?

Yes. Pycnogenol is legal to sell in Ireland as a food supplement under FSAI regulation; it is not a novel food. This product ships from our Dublin warehouse via next-day DPD, so Irish customers pay no customs charges and avoid the import delays that come with ordering from outside the EU. Delivery is free on orders over €75.
